I ALSO THINK BIBLES SHOULD RETURN TO THE CHURCH PEWS.I THINK EVEN THE MERE SITE OF BIBLES IN THE PEWS WOULD INSPIRE SOME PEOPLE TO PICK IT UP AND BEGIN TO FEED THEMSELVES.THE WORD ALWAYS HELPS ME WORSHIP BECAUSE IT HELPS ME TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE ONE I WORSHIP, AND IN TURN I HAVE MORE TO WORSHIP ABOUT.AFTER ALL WORSHIP IS ALL ABOUT HIM,AND OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. MARANATHA!!!

We are going to put pew bibles in our church. We are going to do a campaign so folks can "donate" a hardback bible in memory or in honor of a loved one that will be permanent additions to the worship area. But we are also buying some paperback copies and it will have a note inside that it is free for the taking if anyone needs or wants a bible.

The cost was reasonable - hardback was about $10 and the paperback was about $6 from www.bibles.com

What version are you putting in the pews, Lisa, and is that the samwe version that you are using for liturgy?

SO true. We have pew Bibles, but my congregation prefers "Celebrate!" since it is the "path of least resistance." Don't get me wrong, I like "Celebrate" for use during worship, but I would like to eliminate it and have the congregation actually use the Bible. It is a goal that I am praying will be achieved.

Bring Bibles back into the sanctuary? Yes! I TOTALLY agree with this. For some folks (dare I say most folks, and include myself in that group btw), it may be the ONLY time they pick up a Bible that week. Have people follow the readings from the Bible instead of pre-printed worship supplement? Have large print Bibles available? Or can people bring their own Bible? Yes, yes, and yes!

Great thread, Allison!

Rev Koeneke,

My apologies for not reading your reply earlier. And blessings to you as you prayerfully consider ways to place the Bible in the congregation's hands, whether it be during worship or, even more importantly, encouraging and nurturing members' personal time with the scriptures at home or group study.

We distributed the Gospel of John to everyone attending in the month of August as that was the Gospel used all month and challenged all to read it. 250 Gospels were put in the hands of real people; now what? Another book, dig deeper into that text? Now sure where to go from here.
