Book of Faith

Eugene Peterson (The Message) will kick off the Jubilee Friday night. But instead of a formal "keynote presentation", Eugene will directly engage the questions and concerns that matter most to YOU!

What would you ask Eugene? Post your questions below and Diane Jacobson (Director of the Book of Faith Initiative) may include them in her on-stage discussion with Eugene.

Did you really decline an invitation to meet U2? Seriously, they know and appreciate your work, but do you know theirs? If so, what are your impressions? Please reflect with us on Bible and the imagination.

You've written lots of stuff. What was your favorite project? Why?

Why did you pick "The Message" as the title for your paraphrase of the bible?

What is your take on reading from a paraphrase such as yours during congregational worship, rather than from a translation such as the NRSV?

I'll probably think of others, but here are two for starters.

Paraphrasing the Bible must have required thousands of small to large decisions, on your part, as to exactly what words to choose and how to carefully convey nuances of meaning. Your own humanness would have come into the process, as it would for any other paraphraser or translator. Can you distill your own "theology" into several points telling us what beliefs and personal viewpoints are the most important to you? Or, in another way of wording this question, what central beliefs "informed" your paraphrase? Thank you!
