Have you or someone you know been a part of a 'scripture of the week' program? We have some ideas for promoting it but are wondering about how verse is selected and what has been done to keep the effort going for the long term. Any tidbits of information you can provide would be appreciated!

Some congregations pass around a Bible for the marking of favorite passages before presentation to the new owner. Emmanuel, Elyria is encouraging members to write the location of their favorite passage on a 3 X 5 card to give to each of the new recipients. They then look up the passage and are able to mark their own Bible with the card or by other means.

Scavenger hunts are a popular activity for youth. A congregation in Neenah, Wisconsin created a Bible Scavenger hunt. You can get a copy by searching for "12651320540" at www.feautor.org/en

"The Greatest Story" just released by Augsburg Fortress is definitely worth consideration in your congregation. To be most effective requires extended or additional sessions. However I think you will have favorable results if using only the core sessions. The mesmerizing dvd will prompt attendees to invite others to come and see as well as come and hear. Your local resource center or Book of Faith synod advocate will have a full copy for you to preview or visit www.augsburgfortress.org and click on the "Greatest Story" graphic.

The 2009-2010 Christian Education Planner has an excellent children's message for sharing the value of reading the Bible.Go to this link to get a copy. It could also be used as an introduction for presenting Bibles to children.

First of all, Pastor Ruth Ann gave a vibrant faith sermon that was simply amazing.

and then,
WOW! That's what I was saying to myself as I heard the words to a new rally day song written
by Book of Faith-er Brenda L.Greenwald (you can send her a note, she's duly signed up).

any way, to the tune of LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING, (which she did) Brenda
"rocked" the house.

Peace,

Just received the LACE newsletter today. Very insightful and full of what appear to be good resources. I will definitely explore some of them- especially the on-line "Teaching the Bible course". I was wondering though, if Diana Zapf would be willing to share her worksheets for her Lutheran Study Bible program. That sounds like an idea that might work in my church.

Peter Mayer and I are the authors of God's Standard or Gold Standard? Studies in Proverbs. It's a three session series. We presented the Bible study on Friday August 21st at the CWA.
You can check it out by going to www.elca.org and click on video, go to friday, bible study
The focus verse for session one is

The text is from Proverbs 22:
A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches,
and favor is better than silver or gold.
2The rich and the poor have this in common:
the LORD is the maker of them all.

Peter has written a song which summarizes the text.
You can download it and two other songs for FREE
by going to

www.petermayer.com/bookoffaith
here is MORE THAN SILVER OR GOLD
We walk as one
Oh Lord our maker
Both rich and poor
Oh Lord our maker
Through sun and shadow
Oh Lord our maker
Who names us and claims us
More than silver or gold

We lend we borrow
Lord lift us higher
Through joy and sorrow
Lord lift us higher
Today tomorrow
Lord lift us higher
You name us and claim us
More than silver or gold

Draw us together
Oh Lord our new song
To serve each other
Oh Lord our new song
In your care forever
Oh Lord our new song
Who names us and claims us
More than silver or gold
Who names us and claims us
More than silver or gold

I have decided to do a "blitz" around this series-
On Sunday night we have a study at Sarah's house
On Monday am we have a study at church
On Monday night we have a study at Julie's house
On Tuesday am we have a study at church
On Saturday am we have a men's group studying the series @ church

On Sunday night, Brenda a member of the group, brought her ipod and ipod speakers. She joyfully shared the song with us. It was GREAT!

We just started this schedule on the past Sunday. Folks are excited to Open Scripture and
join the conversation. Please pray for our groups as we continue our journey.
God's peace,
Pastor Ronald T. Glusenkamp

As a result of attending the Book of Faith Jubilee I discovered that the way we have been doing things is not longer a method of interest with folks. Bible Study methods need to change. More folks want to gather together to talk about the relevance of the Bible in to their life. One question to ask is What is God doing in this place? (in the Bible text) Informal settings get more of a response than church settings. Lay people showing hospitality to others by inviting them to join the conversation of friends in a home has more success stories. People today have so much reading material, their choice is not always "devotional materials". We need to think of new ways to engage folks in the Bible. The new Spark Story Bible is a great discussion starter for families--parents sharing the faith stories with their children. How do we pass on the faith? How do we have a faith conversation? Engaging people in the Bible is more than reading about the Bible it is learning to live the Bible.
My head is exploding with all the things mentioned at the Book of Faith Jubilee. These are just a few ramblings.
