Book of Faith

Julie Mankin

How do I as a parent of young children be a part of the Book of Faith Initiative?

I have three children ranging from ages 4-11. How do I encourage reading the Bible at an early age? Sunday School often doesn't provide the depth that I want for my own children. Suggestions?

At times I have used a children's bible story book that tends to talk about the major bible stories that we ususally grew up with. Some congregations present a bilble to children but the age may vary. One suggestion may be trying to determine if you want to make something a regular routine - then after church on Sunday - esp. if there was a children's sermon may be a good time. Maybe if you have a routine for yourself, maybe you can somehow include them at that time. I think the main thing is to engage them regularly in conversatin about scripture and to share why it is important to you. Just a couple of thoughts.

Julie, Great question. As a grandmother, I am even more aware of the value of this early introduction to stories of faith. I found that putting a children's Bible storybook in the car provides opportunities for kids to read and reread the stories - even if it is looking at pictures. In the car we have time to talk about what is happening and how that might apply to even their young lives. Dollar stores have simple cd/books with Bible stories. Children hear the story, see the story and often sing the story. It is then up to you to go deeper. Remember that kids will go deeper as they are able; you are buillding that strong foundation of God's love, forgiveness and call to share with others.
Hang in there!

Do you read to your kids at night? This is an obvious place to add a Biblical story or an allegorical tale based on a Biblical story. Do your kids like to act? I was recently at the home a a friend for the evening. Her daughter comandeered the group of children, ages, 8, 10 and 11 and they "wrote" and performed a play for us. Your kids might enjoy selecting a story to perform for grandma's next visit.
