Bobbie, It must have been difficult to talk about your depression, and then chart a course of behavior that will get you back into the life you were meant to have. I have suffered from depression all of my adult life, maybe even further back. I di...
Bonnie,
Welcome! Both Paul and Katelyn are right on! You're already a part of this even if your congregation hasn't officially signed on. The Book of Faith Initiative is, in a sense, nothing more than a churchwide conviction that has spoken and c...
The "Book of Faith" is an initiative to get us back to "the language of Scripture". It's about really digging in past the surface and studying Scriptures not just alone but with others, being open to interpretation. There have been studies created ...
Your Lutheran Church is participating in the Book of Faith Initiative, Bonnie. They are doing so in at least two ways - one, you are here posting on the BoF Ning site, and two, they use the "Book of Faith" - the holy scriptures - in worship, study...
My Lutheran church (ELCA) is not participating in this. I wold like for someone to explain to me briefly what goes on. It sounds like we Lutherans are waking up to the fact that we don't study the Bible very well or very much. I have been blessed ...
We used the rediscovering the book of faith with a group that included our confirmands, it was really basic and helped to get them interested in looking further into the bible. It was really designed for older teens and adults without much background in reading the bible on their own. the group consisted not only of the kids but about 15 adults ranging from 18-84 and helped to intergrate the members into a continuing relationship. Teens talking with adults it was such a wonderful site.

I just began working through a study Augsburg Fortress has in their series on the "Book of Faith' initiative called "Making Sense of the Book of Faith" to see if it is something I want to use in my church. We have used most of the studies called foundation studies and have been able to raise the interest in getting back to the bible among members who never thought about bible study before. 'Making Sense' kind of goes with what you are saying, the scripture is both OT and NT it is one story complete from begining to end. I have only just got into the study but it is in the format of a question and answer discusion over a cup of coffee at the kitchen table as I like to call it. I took part in a webanar yesterday with augsberg fortress on the studies that are out there (an informational link is on this sites home page) I was surprised at the different studies they now have one is lectionary based following the same scripture used each Sunday another is character based looking at God's use of people throughout scripture and another studies of individual books of the bible. As a church we used the devotional they came out with for Lent which revolved around the Lord's Prayer and they are coming out with one for Advent that sounds good.
There are so many resources out there that sometimes it is hard to choose. I started out looking at "The book of Faith" material for my own personal growth and in sharing what I learned with others God has used it to rekindle a love for His word in others.
If you havn't noticed I sometimes get carried away when I start talking about the Bible (Book of Faith) that is somthing that is new for me.

What is most challenging about engaging in Scripture?
Reading the Bible in its whole to interpret meanings. A challenge is using the OT as a background to learn the lessons of the NT. You can't pick scripture apart, verse or chapter, and get much meaning. Knowing something about the people and land of the time, ex. what was going poliitically. Understanding the Bible requires the ability to handle ambiguity.
Share a Bible passage that is especially meaningful to you.
There are so many. Psalm 104 or any psalm. They are just as real today as when written.
Book of Faith is an ongoing initiative of the ELCA that will grow and develop—including resource options for you and your congregation. Be the first to know about upcoming resources and sign up for Book of Faith resource eUpdates.
