Thank you for visiting. A word of introduction.

Some things in life are really fun. I enjoy scripture study, teaching, visiting with people, learning from young adults, writing poetry and riding my bike. Some of the Bible Studies others have enjoyed are posted on my Synod Bishop's page. I haven't figured out how to set up links for you here yet.

Climate change issues are a passion of mine. I'm a member of the Oregon Global Warming Commission and a trained presenter with The Climate Project. I'm starting to list events that I'm doing on the events tab here. Also, if you want to get back to the Oregon Synod webpage you'll find lots of information there.

Live well!

Hey Neighbor - Or, "Gimme that" Take 5

Let's not forget to breath. Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Christmas is coming. I started this little series of notes with Jim Reeves and "Gimme That Old Time Religion." How about we wrap it up with a little Dave Brubek, just for fun? Take Five!… Continue

A high bar - Or, "Gimmer that" Take 4

Morals, boundaries and laws change over time. I don't want to make myself out to be a "relativist" or get into a "situational ethics" debate, this is just an observation. Why do they change? Well, two things pop into my head right away. Knowledge changes and grows, for one thing. And then the needs of people… Continue

Mere shadows of Love - Or, "Gimme that" Take 3

Shadows can capture the essence of an object, but they are flat and colorless.

Last week I talked about twin emphases that wind their way through the Bible. There is a concern for rules, boundaries and morals - which I associated with "purity codes" - and then there is what I called the "prophetic" strand. Today I’m trying to tackle rules, boundaries and morals.Continue

Saints

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Biblical DNA - Or, "Gimme that" Take 2

Last week I wrote a little about how one might think about welcoming gay and lesbian folk into the Christian fold from a Biblical point of view. Actually it is a really awkward question. I mean how can you not welcome people into faith?! But I write because it is an issue for us in the ELCA right now.

I find two major strands of thought in the Bible when it comes to moral or ethica… Continue

what I find interesting is that none of the disciples helped ?? probably out of fear of arrest?? Jesus had told them the flock would be scattered and they were!!! And also if these disciples had believed that Jesus would rise from the dead ,,would...

It's interesting that a "secret disciple" of Jesus and a man who "first came to Jesus by night" are the two that prepared the Lord's body for burial. Interesting also that they were both men of very high ranking in the Jewish temple...the same gro...

Profile Information

What is the name of your congregation / organization?
Oregon Synod
What is your role in your congregation / organization?
Bishop
What is most challenging about engaging in Scripture?
I've always lived with a freedom to interpret. It is frustrating to me to run into brittle literalism or means of interpretation that shut down conversation.
Share a Bible passage that is especially meaningful to you.
For freedom Christ has set you free. Stand fast, therefore, and never again submit to a yoke of slavery.
