I have been enjoying my new devotional booklet..."If God is my Strength, Why am I still tired?" It was written by Maggie Hilmer...a physical therapist who is also a caregiver for her husband (a pastor) who has Parkinson's Disease. If you know any ca…

All week I have been pondering the Gospel from last Sunday. Mark 10:17-31. (It's the story about a camel passing through the eye of a needle.) A man approached Jesus asking how he might inherit eternal life, Jesus proceeded to recite the commandment…

I think this portion of the Easter story is very significant. Had the burial clothes been missing, it could suggest that Christ was some sort of magician and walked off...or that someone had stolen the body still wrapped up. Had they been thrown her…

It's interesting that a "secret disciple" of Jesus and a man who "first came to Jesus by night" are the two that prepared the Lord's body for burial. Interesting also that they were both men of very high ranking in the Jewish temple...the same group…

My father was a Lutheran minister. He passed away 30 years ago last Sunday. Often he held retreats at a lovely place in the Columbia River Gorge...Menucha. (a Hebrew word meaning "ever-changing, renewing stillness.") Dad liked to incorporate foot wa…

According to this program, Pilate was in Jerusalem, during the Passover, much to his disdain...as a show of power. Thousands of people would be coming to the temple to celebrate, and the Romans needed to show that they were the ones in control. Jesu…

Today I am pondering on scripture that speaks of Jesus in the temple. In Luke 2:46-47, Jesus is a young boy. Sitting with the teachers, listening to them and questioning them. "And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers."…

I was raised in a Lutheran church, and when I was young, our church celebrated communion monthly. (This would be back in the 50's and 60's.) Sometime in the 70's, we started celebrating communion weekly. I personally prefer that. I appreciate being…

"and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it." Passover is a little more than a week away. I can't help but think how often Christ must have looked at those who surrounded Him (during what He knew to be Hi…

It is interesting to me to think of the church as a field of wheat. Nice visual...especially when I picture a wheat field blowing in a breeze. Flexible, yet firmly rooted. And bundled together, we can provide food for the hungry. I usually think of…

Galatians 6 instructs us to bear one another's burdens. Today I was asked, "How far are we, as flawed humans, supposed to take this?" Standing by someone, helping them over a rough patch is easy for most Christians. But what about those people with…

Things of earthly value...things of divine value. It is easy to get caught up in the first...after all, we are creatures of the earth...right? However, we must remember that the most important thing about us is...we are children of the Lord. Heirs t…

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 2 Philippians 4:4-7

A great devotional booklet...

I have been enjoying my new devotional booklet..."If God is my Strength, Why am I still tired?" It was written by Maggie Hilmer...a physical therapist who is also a caregiver for her husband (a pastor) who has Parkinson's Disease.
If you know any caregivers...this would be a wonderful gift to them! You can order it from Creative Communications for the Parish. www.creativecommunications.com. (You could order a lot...they are only 77 cents!)

Mark10:17-31

All week I have been pondering the Gospel from last Sunday. Mark 10:17-31. (It's the story about a camel passing through the eye of a needle.)
A man approached Jesus asking how he might inherit eternal life, Jesus proceeded to recite the commandments. "I've done those things all of my life." was the man's response. At that, Jesus looked at him through loving eyes and said, "You lack one thing. Go, sell what you own. Give the money to the poor. You will have treasure in heaven. Come, follow me."… Continue

The Great Truth - John 8

"I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." These are words that Jesus spoke to the Pharisees...and words He speaks to us.
Have you ever walked in darkness? Not in your home in the middle of the night...but somewhere that you aren't familiar with. Maybe when you were out camping sometime. There are plenty of things out there that can trip you up, slow you down, or seriously harm you. Most people make sure that they bring a flashlig… Continue

Who Was Jesus? The Last Days.

I just finished watching a show on the Discovery Channel..."Who Was Jesus? The Last Days." I found it very interesting. There were two things mentioned that I had never known before...or never "put it together" in my mind before.
The first was that when Jesus was brought to Pilate...He was taken to the governor's headquarters, the same place where Herod had resided when in Jerusalem! When Jesus was born, Herod wanted to protect his reign and ordered all male Jewish babies to be slain...not takin… Continue

Jesus in the temple...

Today I am pondering on scripture that speaks of Jesus in the temple. In Luke 2:46-47, Jesus is a young boy. Sitting with the teachers, listening to them and questioning them. "And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers." Quite a different picture than his final visit to the temple! In his final visit...people took notice of him too...for a totally different reason. This time, Jesus isn't sitting and talking with the teachers...he is furious...driving out the vendors… Continue
