What is the name of your congregation / organization?
St. Paul Lutheran Church
What is your role in your congregation / organization?
Lay member and Sunday School teacher for adults and kids
What is most challenging about engaging in Scripture?
That it was written by ego- and ethnocentric individuals/men from their own historical and cultural perspectives. There is universal truth in there but it is sometimes hard to stomach as written.
Share a Bible passage that is especially meaningful to you.
"Jesus wept." John 11:35
"'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and the great commandment. And the second is like it;'You shll love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." Matthew 37-40
"I AM Who I AM" Gen 14

Hi Elaine...
the leadership training event I spoke of can be found at:
http://bookoffaith.ning.com/events/book-of-faith-jubilee
I can't remember how I found it...maybe I was just checking
under the EVENTS heading of BOF. Let me know if you
can't find it. It sounds like they have lots of great plans.

Hi Elaine...
I came across your BOF page by following a link from my synod
group, that led to Dwight DuBois...and that led to you!
In reading your remarks, I feel that you and I are in a similar
situation: inspired by the BOF possibilities, and wondering how to
pass that enthusiasm along to our congregations. By the way...
I am from Yankton, SD...ever been there? I grew up in
Sioux City, IA, and graduated from Iowa State University...and
have ridden RAGBRIA, so I feel a real affinity for Iowans!
Anyway...I have much more free time than you (kids out of the
nest, and don't work full-time) so I have really enjoyed cruising
around the BOF website. It's incredible. And I am also looking
for ways to generate interest here at home. I have gone to our
church council to ask approval to register our congregation as a
BOF participant. When I did that, I handed out a printed-out
page from our synod website that promotes the BOF...and that
was well-received. I will be our congregational representative.
I will write a brief article in our monthly newsletter...and develop
a bulletin board space devoted to BOF news. I attend a weekly
Bible Study at Church, and have incorporated some of the BOF
materials with our discussions....and since I am secretary of that
group, I have e-mailed an occasional page (conversation) or
video to that group. They say they like the material, but only
two have actually signed up on BOF. To my thinking, that is OK.
The idea of internet Bible Study really appeals to me, but it seems
painfully slow to spread the word. That doesn't discourage me.
I'm having fun...and the virus will spread! My own synod seems
a little slow in getting organized for this, but say that leadership
plans are in the works. We have synod conference the first
week of June, so I'm hoping for something by then...so our
congregation will actually get some small groups going for fall.
Meanwhile, there is some BOF leadership training scheduled in
conjunction with the national conference in Minneapolis in August.
I'm sure it will be great, and am thinking I should attend. I'll send
you a link to that notice. Good luck with all your efforts!
Have you printed out some info directly from the BOF site to
share with your Sunday school class? Yes...I know from experience that when a congregation is focused on finding a pastor, everything else gets put on the back burner. I'd love to
hear from you...share what you have tried. We have ordered
the BOF DVD...and I suppose will use it as an introductory class...
but haven't yet. Our congregation kind of likes to sit on things
and wait for fall to begin new programs...and in reality, I think that's what most folks' mindset is. But I'm fired up!
