"Bible stumper" is the title of a church newsletter article that encourages people to read a specific book of the Bible. The pastor lists 3 questions in the specific named book of the Bible. The questions are intriguing;the answers would not be fami…

I would also recommend using "Rediscovering the Book of Faith". That gives a brief overview of how the Bible as we have come to know it has come about it.

A new resource you may find helpful. I have just finished reading a book that should be particularly helpful to people who struggle with apparent contradictions in scripture text. "The Gospel of Grace" by Dr. Mark Wickstrom in a very easy to read fo…

Our congregation began the Book of Faith on June 1st. We will begin meeting on Saturday for discussion. The plan is to have weekly discussions on Saturday evening after worship, Sunday mornings before worship, and on Tuesday mornings too.

Paul- Thanks for telling us about BAM. Be sure to keep us updated with the activities that seem to connect most with people! Numbers can be deceptive. Yes, we have only 9 in this meeting out of 32 congregations that have signed on at the website. A…

Thanks for the welcome, Karen and it is great to join all of you. But, why only 9 of us. Surely "The Book of Faith" is important to many more people in NE Ohio - so let's all recruit more members. One thing we are doing this summer at Celebration i…

Karen,
Sorry to not reply more quickly to your question about Abingdon's Genesis to Revelation Bible study series. I Like it because it goes about study of a passage (usually one to two chapters in length) in three dimensions. The first is: "What does the Bible say?" This part asks questions to help readers notice significant details in the passage. These questions are mostly objective and the verse in which the answer can be found is given. The second dimension is: "What does the Bible mean?" explains inforamtion that will help the reader to better understand what the passage means. This includes the meaning and interpretation of certain key words, the historical context of the text, geographic and cultural factors etc. The third dimension is, "What does the Bible mean to me?" This dimension asks questions intended to help the student apply the passage to daily life like "How does this passage apply to my daily faith walk?" and "How does this passage call me to respond as a Christian?" and "What does the passage require of us as a group?" I try to apply the four "Book of Faith" ways of studying the Bible and they all seem to fit. I chose this series because it seemed to be the best book by book series that seemed to have a comparable approach to Biblical interpretaion to my own (not too literal and conservative but valuing the Bible as the authoritative source and norm for Christian faith and life.) At the time I started using these resources, the Book of Faith studies of the individual books of the Bible we had decided to study were not yet published. Otherwise I probably used them. I do have a partiality toward Augsburg-Fortress but look for the best material I for my current needs.

Karen - About the duct tape stole: I don't remeber whose idea it was, but Pastor Mark Griffith was coerced into making a cardboard stole encased entirely in duct tape. All through synod assembly we invited people to put cards with their name/email/congregation on it for a chance to win a Lutheran Study Bible. We had the Bishop wear it up front and pick the first name, then we picked names off to give Bibles to at the dinner the first night of assembly. It was a hit and seriously expanded our email list.

Karen,
I did not find what I felt would be a good time or setting for a public reading, one that would have a good participation. However, several times during the B year, I encouraged worshippers to take time to read through Mark in one sitting on their own. I don't know if any did that. I do have a number of members who are quite diligent in reading their Bibles on their own so I would guess that there were several who did. For C cycle, we will be starting a Bible study on Luke sometime in January. I meet with a group of seniors at one of our local senior citizen apartments one afternoon each week and have a good sized small group. It's not limited to residents of that building. We have membes of my parish and non- members taking part. I have been using Abingon's Genesis-Revelation series for studies of books of the Bible. In the past year and a half we have completed, Acts, and the minor prophets and are currently on Revelation. We will start on Luke as soon as we complete Revelation.

Karen,
I do not have the numbers from our Bethlehem trip but I will try to get them for you. However, this past summer we were "Marching with the Saints" in support of the youth going to New Orleans. The plan was to go from Celebration to Mississippi to New Orleans to Illinois and home -2468 miles or chapters. We did that with time to spare so we took a side trip to Gettysburg Seminary and back 600 chapters. So our total goal was 3068 miles/chapters and we did 3170. Not sure how many people but again I will see if I can find it for you.

Peace, Paul
