Hi Kevin...Thanks for allowing me to observe your on-line study on Galatians.
I have picked up many tips from your study, and have begun a pilot study, 4 weeks, on Philippians on our South Dakota Synod group. It is a "learn by doing" endeavor, and before jumping in, I enlisted the participation of several friends to ensure we'd in fact HAVE a study group. It is sort of a training run for those who might branch out into their own congregations. I have noticed several studies that started strong, only to wane as the weeks progressed. I'm trying to evaluate that symptom. I felt you did such an excellent, and thorough, job of introducing your study. People seem to find it requires quite a commitment...and just get too busy with other things. I liked that you notified (reminded) your group each time you began a new conversation. I have been following that example. We are just beginning our 3rd week, and I feel it has been going well...I think keeping it short (4 weeks) helps too. Of course I have loved doing it...wasn't sure that I myself was up to the task...but I think any lay person with a little experience with Bible Study, and who can consult a couple of study Bibles, can lead a group. And perhaps the group itself should remain smallish, so participants have a sense of responsibility for its success. I'm also thinking that it is people with some past experience in Bible Study, and convinced of its benefit, that will make things "cook." When we try this with our congregation, I will start small, and with a hand-picked group, and if that is successful, and generates enthusiasm for the format, ask those participants to form their own small group. That may help ensure some built in rapport. It's important to open it up to everyone, so as not to seem exclusive, but really requires a core group who are committed. Your on-line study was truly an inspiration for me, and very instructive. I appreciate the opportunity to look in. If you'd like to, you'll find our study on the South Dakota Synod group page. Good luck with more BOF activities. I think it's super. And have a great summer.
