In response to questions about how youth can get involved in the Book of Faith Initiative, we are planning a special event for youth leaders and volunteers August 15th from 10am to 3:30pm. This will be a time for youth workers to be together and fig…

That's not what I meant. I have that but had to create my own heavily modified version so as not to intimidate people. I meant a web-based survey with the same kinds of questions. This would serve the double purpose (with proper consent) of allowing…

On Sunday, we took Psalm 107 and divided up the reading -- verses 1-32, not just the lectionary verses -- so that one side detailed the afflictions (Some went down to the seas...), the other side responded with, "Then they cried to the Lord in their…

Side note: I discovered that if you don't specify a version, ref.ly picks a random one out of those available.

Great news for social networking fans who like the Bible: Logos launched a new website today that makes it easy to create short Bible links. Here's part of their promo material: "Ref.ly is a URL shortening service with a twist. Simply go to ref.ly,…

Thanks for this. Diane Jacobson posted the questions elsewhere on this site and I stumbled on your post when looking for that again. It's a great way of reading a text communally, and also a fantastic complement for the 4-fold Book of Faith approach…

Director of Youth and Family Ministries

Mark 12:28-31. There are plenty of meaningful passages, but I use this and its parallel Luke 10:27 to keep me grounded (on the good days, anyway) in what's most important: God and my neighbor.

Psalm 107 - God Gives and Takes

Grab a Bible or web-bible (try bible.crosswalk.com) and read all of Psalm 107 in a single sitting (it's too long to paste here). Now, how do you feel about God?

My thoughts (for what they're worth). In verse 12 "he used suffering to humble them"... was he the efficient cause or just taking advantage of the situation caused by their sinfulness. Either way, the outcome was good, but it's still hard to swallow a God that causes suffering whether it's true or not.

John 2 - Fundraising and Fair Trade (or Cleansing the Temple)

John 2:13-22 (March 15, The Cleansing of the Temple)-
Our adult study this morning asked the question: What exactly was wrong with what these people were doing? It was legal, because it was in the court of the Gentiles. It provided a necessary service so that when Ben and Sara from the outlying territories came to Jerusalem, they didn't have to bring goats or doves with them the whole way.

Some possible answers:
-They were making a profit
-They were not interested in glorifying God
-They were l… Continue

Psalm 103 - Dust and Clay

Psalm 103:13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on his faithful followers.

he realizes we are made of clay. (NET)

The word "clay" here is usually translated dust, like Ash Wednesday's "From dust you have come..." But whether it's dust or clay, "we are made of" it by someone... the same someone who has compassion on us. It's quite a comfort to be reminded not only that I came from dust and will come back to that, but that t… Continue
