FlamesDailyESPSGWx.doc

I have worked with these faith practices almost since the start of my ordained ministry. They began as a discipleship initiative in the ELCA and have become a basic instruction for my ministry. We call them faith practices because they possess a building character to inform and reveal the life-giving promise in Jesus Christ.

In looking at the Revised Common Lectionary, I have incorporated these faith practices within the contours of the Sunday designated lessons. The sermon for each Sunday can serve as the catalyst by which we reflect upon the subsequent passages contained in this daily devotional for the remainder of each week.

In keeping with our fire image, I would encourage all participants to keep in mind three aspects of this series: consume, refine, and stoke. There is usually some part of us that needs to be consumed that gets in the way of our practicing faith. Like the refiner’s fire, there are aspects of our faith that exist but need more work or more attention. All fires need to be stoked from time to time; building up the flame so that others can be touched by the light and the warmth of this Christian faith. Each Saturday’s devotion will ask participants to set aside some quiet time to pray and to reflect on these aspects of consume, refine, and stoke.

Sunday, October 11, Mark 10:17, “What must I do?” The man in this lesson seems to forget the idea behind gift. God gives because it is God’s nature. It is not by anything we do lest we think we deserve it. It’s almost as if the man is checking of...

Our study of scripture is also to place these verses in the context of our daily lives. The invention of the printing press allowed Martin Luther to place the Bible in the hands of the people, in the language they understood. He also produced th...

Memorial Lutheran Church & St. Croix River Valley

On Saturday I was given the opportunity to ride in the bucket of a ladder truck. You've heard me speak of the beauty of our location. I got some great pictures from a different perspective to give you an idea of our church building's location. We're experiencing some unusually warm days for September in Minne… Continue

New Orleans - National Youth Gathering

Hello all. Just a quick note to say we're having a good time. We are being pampered with rooms at the JW Marriot.

Gathering officials and New Orleans businesses did not seem fully prepared to receive 35,000+ people. The restaurants were running out of good and many of them had 2-3 hour waits. Our youth did not eat dinner until after 11:00 p.m.

Today we got to see pictures to remind us of the destruction from hurricane Katrina. We also spent time at the InterActive Center where youth could lear… Continue

Independence Day Parade Humor

Each year the city of Afton hosts an Independence Day parade. It is simple in structure. Show up with a float and pull in line. Parade starts at noon. Procede down the one main street and come back. Parade is usually done by 1:00 p.m. A couple thousand people show up to watch the parade. It is truly small town americana at it's finest.

Memorial Lutheran Church usually puts together a float highlighting our upcoming vacation Bible school and get our name out in the community.… Continue

And a good time was had by all!

The 2009 Strawberry Festival is now history. We had beautiful weather, a nice turn out, and lots of great conversation. I do see this fund-raiser more as an outreach event. While the main seating is under canopies in our back yard, our air-conditioned fellowship hall is also available for seating. I am so pleased to see some people come through our doors with walkers, wheelchairs, canes, portable oxygen, and other assistive technologies. All have smiles on their faces as they enjoy a day out for… Continue

I want to thank you for a great example for using the BOF resources. I have been looking over your shoulder (and others) the past few weeks, watching how you conducted your on-line Bible Study. We South Dakotans have been slow to catch the BOF fever...but inspired by what you have been doing, we have begun a study of Philippians on our SD Synod page. We have had an encouraging response, and I know we will build from this new experience. Thanks again...see how shared Faith grows!
