Erica: Opens the Scripture and Joins the Conversation

Redeemer Lutheran, the church in which I serve as pastor, is trying to revitalize the existing library. We have a cart that is filled weekly with various items taken from the library and much to my surprise members are actually taking things from the cart! I came across some reasonably priced children's books at Madison Church Supply that tell the story of the death and resurrection of Jesus. In worship I invited the kids to come forward and I walked them through Holy Week using the front cover… Continue

Confirmation Punishment Leads to Empowerment

Trevor showed up to acolyte once last year and has never showed when scheduled this year. He is scheduled to be confirmed in May, but I told his mom Trevor needs to get in some acolyte service before his confirmation. The kids are required to attend the Wednesday Lenten services with the understanding we do not meet for "structured" class. I suggested to his mom that Trevor acolyte for all our Wednesday Lenten services. My parish administrator didn't think it was "fair" to the other students. To… Continue

Gladys' Kitchen Table

After church a few weeks ago, Kelly came to me with Morgan and said, "Pastor Stephanie, Morgan wants to join confirmation. She's never had first communion. Could you do a quick first communion thing with her so she could take communion?" I said sure and asked Kelly to join her so Morgan didn't have to meet with the pastor by herself. Kelly said, "Either me or Jessica or Kacy or someone."

Two weeks later, Kelly comes to me again. "Pastor Stephanie, Courtney hasn't taken first communion. Could sh… Continue

Hi Stephanie,
I drove past Rio late Saturday night last week on my way home from Wausau. I also saw my friend, Ginny, who lives in Rio. She said you live just around the corner from her. Update from my church, our assoicate pastor left to be the head of Outreach for Hope for the Greater Milwaukee Synod. We now have an interm pastor, Pastor Pam. She seems really nice.

Stephanie! Thanks for writing. We are located 18 miles north of Milwaukee. 4 miles west of lake Michigan. Tiny, beautiful, rustic little town full of history. Advent is a dynamite congregation, relatively average sized but with a HUGE heart! We are RIC, open, embracing and extremely grateful for the blessings we receive. Please visit adventchurch.org to see what we are about. Blessings to you and your congregation. Janis.

Hi Stephanie, I'm assigned to the Florida-Bahamas Synod though they currently do not have any possible call situations for me which leaves us waiting. Give my regards to Brad.

I have not yet developed The Shack into a retreat...but would be interested in doing so! I love leading retreats, and would do so at almost any given opportunity! If you would like me to do some work on this, let me know!

[We are in the same synod. I have had a few BOF exchanges with your church musician. What are you doing with BOF and how did you get connected with the ELCA Book of Faith Social Network?]

Hi ... sorry for the delayed reply. That church musician you have been corresponding with is actually my husband :-) I just completed the 2-year core program of the SCSW Lay School of Ministry. I'm hoping BOF will help me to continue the study and rich discussions I experienced in the program. I'm also very interested in what other congregations are doing and how they do it. I like to take "field trips" to worship with others, so I might see you sometime ...
