Paraphrasing the Bible must have required thousands of small to large decisions, on your part, as to exactly what words to choose and how to carefully convey nuances of meaning. Your own humanness would have come into the process, as it would for an…

How do you equip people in your congregation to rediscover the Bible and its power to change lives and speak to us today?

Doug, I would like to use a portion of your blog in a brief "update" I will be giving to our Synod Assembly next week, as a Synod Advocate (Nebraska), if I may have your permission. The quote would be: "The Bible simply is a difficult book to read.…

Hi Sue,
I am a 58 year old widow. I'm an elementary school teacher and have taught for 25+ years. I was raised in Michigan where my Dad was an engineer for Buick for 28 years. Both my parents have passed away (Mom in 2000 and Dad in 2001), but they were married for 60 years. I've been a Lutheran all my life and my Dad was active in the Michigan Synod. He was elected to serve on various Board of Directors (Wittenberg University, Augustana College, Carthage College) as Michigan changed its support. We took our family vacations around his board meetings as well as the Synod and LCA Assembly's. I have felt a call to serve on the Synod level as well. I am presently on the Synod Council and last year I was re-elected to another three year term. I do not have any children. I have a twin sister who lives in Bexley, Ohio near Trinity Lutheran Seminary and a brother who lives in Houston. I have a passion for Global mission, in that I have been on three mission trips to Peru and one to Panama and I am thinking about going to El Salvador with Thrivent Builds & Habitat for Humanity. I also help out occasionally with Habitat for Humanity & Thrivent in working with Lutheran churches in Conroe and The Woodlands to build (paint and caulk) homes in Conroe. I play handbells in our church choir, I'm on the Altar Guild, a Lector, and occasionally I'm an Assisted Minister (help out during the service: adminstering communion and leading prayers). See you in a few days. Sue

Hi Sue,
WE all just got the big CWA booklet to read through a few days ago. As I had asked in my last e-mail :what rate did you get for Friday, Satuday and Sunday? Do I owe you $120.16 since I think the room is totally $240.32. Our voting members met this afternoon with the Bishop and most of the other voting members in a meeting at the Synod office. We went over the schedule, asked questions and exchanged e-mail addresses and cell #'s. The 11 of us will be staying at the Hilton Hotel which we found out is .4 mile from the Minneapolis Convention Center. The daytime temps. are in the 70's. Our low is in the 80's with the high/heat index is in the low 100's. Peace, Sue

Hi Sue,
Is the rate for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday $240.32?
What time are you flying into Minneapolis? Where are you flying in from? I am sure looking forward to temperatures/or heat index not in the 100's!!!! I still have to find out from NW Airlines if they charge for any checked in baggage, but I'm definitely checking in a bag and bringing on one as well--I have trouble deciding & packing for a trip; especially one for as long as 10 days.
God's Peace, Sue

Hi Sue, I got your e-mail about you making the Super 8 motel reservation for Friday - Sunday nights (Aug. 14 - 16). What price did you get? When I made my reservation for Thursday, Aug. 13, I made mine for a Queen bed as it was cheaper than getting a room with two beds. I realize when we have our room it would be for two Queen beds, so how does that affect my reservation and price (as you said the person at Super 8 said I could have the same room and wouldn't have to switch when you come on Friday). I was able to get my room for $62.00? Sue

Hi Sue, What rate did you get for the three nights? It should have been $240.32 with a AAA membership. So I owe you a check for $120.16. That works out $40.00 a night . What is your cell number? Mine is : 281-638-1972. I still have to contact Northwest Airlines to see if they are charging for checked bags checked the way Continental Airlines is (they're charging $20. for the first bag and $30. for the second bag.)Sue

Hi Sue, I haven't heard from you in almost two weeks as to what to do about the motel reservation. You had asked me to make the reservation and if you should send the check or give to it me, but I had said that I have to make my reservation separately from the night of August 13, since you are getting in the day after I do. So it would actually be easier for you to make the motel resservation for us for Aug. 14-17. and then I pay you my half ($120.16). It's now less than two weeks away and we don't yet have a motel reservation as I was waiting to hear from you. I e-mailed you on the personal address you sent me, but no response there. I hope all is okay at your end. What is your cell #? Maybe we can finalize motel reservations that way. My e-mail address is: suemoboots@aol.com Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Sue: I just thought since it's going to cost me $30 - $40.for a room at Luther Seminary and it wouldn't include a bathroom in the room, AC, a TV or radio and so if I split the cost of a nearby motel room (it could cost about $70 -$80.) it would be about the same amount of $ I'd be spending at Luther Seminary, but with amenities. I also thought of renting a car because it would get me from the airport to the motel and then to Luther Seminary. Plus, when I called Stud Hall she said restaurants are a good walk and suggested taking a bus (only two lunches and Saturday night dinner is included. A car would also give an opportunity to see the Saint Paul area. I have a list of motels near Luther Seminary and I'll check into the cost of a car rental. Sue Moehring

You are lucky you have a relative that lives there as it especially helps out on accomodation & etc. You mentioned you probably will stay with your cousin Sunday night, Aug.16, and thatyour cousin will take you to the Hilton Hotel for the CWA. Are you not able to stay Friday and Saturday nights with your cousin as well? I will be staying at the Hilton Hotel as well as the other Texas - Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod voting members including our Bishop. Would you want to share a motel room nearby to Luther Seminary? I'm seriously thinking about renting a car if I can get a reasonable price for 3 days/ a weekend rate (I'm going to check with Enterprise & Alamo). How are you getting from the airport to Luther Seminary/surrounding area? I know a shuttle from the airport goes to Minneapolis and to the Mall of America, but I don't know if it goes to St.Paul. I called and e-mailed Luther Seminary's Stube Hall. Someone called me (I think her name is Cathy) from Stube Hall. She said Stube Hall only has two rooms with bathrooms and they are already reserved, but they have single rooms for $30.00 and doubles (with two beds) for $40.00. These rooms have no air conditioning, but do have window box fans (what I grew up with in Michigan)--the weather right now is in the 70's (sounds fantastic compared to Houston's temps in high 90' s--low 100's). How are getting from the airport to Luther Seminary? I am possibly thinking about renting a car from the airport and returning it there on Monday, Aug. 17. Then, I'd take the shuttle to my hotel in Minneapolis where I'll be staying when I'm attending the Churchwide Assembly. When are are you flying to Minneapolis? Since the Book of Faith Jubilee starts at 11:30 on Friday, Aug. 14, I am thinking about flying up from Houston on Thursday as it's a three hour flight and it will take time (I'm thinking an hour or so) from the airport to Luther Seminary. I need to finalize that soon because travel arrangements for the voting members to the ELCA's Churchwide Assembly are required to have it done by July 15. The telephone # at Stube Hall is: 651-523-1619. Sue Moehring

Thanks Sue for the info, but Terry Erickson from Luther Seminary phoned me this morning and I registered over the phone through him. He did say he would send me a confirmation, but it's about 1:30 PM and I haven't received it as yet. Now my next steps are to get a room for August 13-16, (I am thinking about staying at Luther Seminary's Stube Hall if there is still space. Where are you staying? Also, I have to call the ELCA's travel agent for the Churchwide Assembly (Best Travel) and get my airline reservation made.
