Nice observations :) "a 12 year old and a 69 year old can talk to each other". That's just awesome. I love seeing generations come together for fellowship in faith. I'm glad that is occurring in this study for your congregation.

Thank you for your response. I too, am getting familiar with the Book of Faith resources, and intend to begin somewhere. Possibly with the lectionary based series. I consider my church Bible based- in that the sermons usually come from one or more of the readings. One adult Sunday class decided to read through the OT with a very able leader.... We are in Numbers now. I would like to see my entire church involved in some way. Are there materials for older children and teens? I can't help but be struck by the "need" to tell Christians to study the Bible. Isn't that we are always supposed to do? Are there many ELCA churches who don't study the Bible? What do they do? Sometimes we have a class on social issues, but it gets bogged down into personal beliefs, which often deviates from what the Bible says, which for me is the bottom line. I like to think of myself as an intellectual traditionalist; The open mind always leads back to the Bible, including the OT with the NT. Often they are separated into 2 distinct theologies.

Hey Carol,

Thanks for writing on my wall. What the study is showing is absolutely right. What is funny is that it actually enhanced my faith to recognize this rather than took away from it. I was a person full of questions and when I asked some big ones (for me at least) as a teen, such as "wouldn't stomach acids kill Jonah" and get the only response from my teachers that we just have to accept that. For me, that was not good enough. So, I started researching as a teen and found out about authors and prose in the Bible. In seminary that was confirmed as well. I know I am rambling a bit, but finding all this out actually helped me read the Bible in a whole new way appreciating how God used people to write the book, but also recognizing that God appreciated different styles of writing (if that makes sense). Good luck on your journey.

Hello Carol,

I too am currently unemployed and I have been praying to find God's purpose in my life. I know that if I just trust in Him, He will show me the way. I tend to try to figure things out for myself, though, so I need to stay out of the way and let Him be in charge. Thanks for you comment. Sincerely, Robin Flom

Thank you for sharing your blog entry with me! I offer Mug the Pastor on Monday mornings at 10:00 a.m. Members bring a mug and we talk about whatever during Mug the Pastor. I created an online Mug the Pastor on Book of Faith for my members. I'm going to post your blog entry and ask my members to comment on it. Maybe your blog entry will start a new way to approach bible study and confirmation! Glad you are finding a way to use my Glady's Kitchen blog entry. This truly was a spirit led venture and I day I will never forget! How do you live out your vocation as a disciple of Jesus? I'm adding you as a friend and I hope we can continue the conversation as well as sharing ideas with each other through the Book of Faith Social Network!

Thank you, Carol. I'm new at this means of conversing - lots to learn. Four of us lay persons are going to wrap up two months of doing Opening the Book of Faith with about 35-40 people in our church. Tomorrow we're going to be visiting with the congregational president about the BoF Initiative. Hopefully.... Darlys

Hi Carol,
It was wonderful to hear your story--thank you for sharing it! I'm impressed you were able to use the study with such a diversity of ages, but what a blessing! I hope your next sessions are just as fruitful. Keep me posted as to how it's going--I'd love to hear about it!

I just wanted to take a moment to say Hi and agree it is hard to find time to be consistant in bible reading, I know a young man who is just starting seminary and his thought on the matter was that even it you have time for just one word a day God will bless that, in my life I have found that one word of scripture will fill me with comfort, like Love bring John 3:16 to mind; eagle-Isa 40:31, keep-IITim 1:12b. When my day is crazy, which is quite often, I just find a word popping into my head and while I haven't opened the bible that day God has reached me.

book of Faith Study

We have begun a study over Lent using Rediscovering the Book of Faith and I just wanted to share a little of how God is using it to bless us.
The group consists of all ages from 7th grade to 80 year olds. The study speaks to each one. Observions:
.teens save nothing-the new testatment letters would never have been written if left to them
.the older you get the more things you remember of your youth-the less of yesterday writing
them down is a good thing to do
.we knew little about Deborah, but a… Continue

this is me!

Hi!
I'm just learning the Lutheran perspective on the bible. My back ground is a mixed bag. Catholic, UCC, PCA. In both UCC and PCA churches I attended bible school with each having it's own denominational slant and with the Catholic chuch way back in my time (before conformation age of 13) I'm not even sure the bible was used it was all in Latin back then. With all the differences the one thing that is always the same God loves us. I have always found that He is the one to provide what I need w… Continue
