To my brother's and sister's in Christ, may he bring an abundance of joy to your heart and a warmth to your soul in troubled times. For it is only in Him that we are saved. -Amen
I have completed another packet of essay's and annotation's for my current semester and have two more to go. I have asked myself many things on this journey of understanding the Protestant Reformation, from a socio-economic view.
I have found that timing of Luther's writings could not have been better. The printing pr…

Annotation-Martin Luther, Selections from His Writings, Edited by John Dillenberger
John Dillenberger edited this work and profoundly adopted a style, true to the academic. His approach to understanding Martin Luther, is summed up well, “…Selections have been made with a concern for variety in form and content, expository and polemical treaties, biblical commentaries, sermons and theses have been included.” Overall thi…

Annotation-Reformers in Profile, Edited by B. A. Gerrish. Copyright 2009, use by permission only.
Edited by B. A. Gerrish, of the University of Chicago, Reformers in Profile, offers a vast range of influential individuals of the Reformation age. The forward, is a testament to the academic abstaining from alignment with any of those written about, thus keeping the University of Chicago and B. A. Gerrish out of any one alignment. Interestingly, the introductions states that, “One could present th…

Annotation-The Bondage of the Will, By Martin Luther/Translated by J. J. Parker and O. R. Johnston
Copyright 2009. Use by permission only.
Translated by J. J. Parker and O. R. Johnston, Martin Luther’s, The Bondage of The Will, strikes a defiant, sometimes coarse tone. Direct in approach, Luther response to Desiderious Erasmus thoughts on Church, faith and approach. Luther has a systematic approach, which remains consistent and adheres to his theological principles.
The theological introductio…

Annotation-Calvin, Institutes of the Christian Religion, Volume 1 and 2
Copyright 2009 Use by permission only.
Edited by John T. McNeill and from the, "Library of Christian Classics," the text is informative and of two challenging volumes. What of these challenges, the authoritative translations, without individual introduction, rely on the preconceived knowledge of the reader, on Calvin and his progress. I respect the fact that this translation does not transcend into the biographical arena, b…

My blogging gets a bit sparse this time of year. The other passion in my life is Odyssey of the Mind. It is a program that works to teach kids creativity and problems solving, it is wonderful. I co-coordinate for our school, as well as coach and parent. So my writing time is a bit limited.
I am also currently without my laptop (read the previous blog for that story).
These things create an atmosphere that makes it very difficult to get creative time. So, I am still out here in the world. Still…

Taking into consideration the mind/body/spirit/life connections, my partner and I decided to try South Beach. I have a family history of high cholesterol and during the months of depression have become dependent on carbs and sugar as my source of food during the day,
We decided that it was time to write a new chapter in our health and caring for our bodies. So my husband and I cut the carbs and sugar out of our diet. Outside of a couple of instances of crazy: finding a donut in my kitchen and t…

Hi, happy All Saints Sunday.
Book of Faith
I love this line from Peter's song, "Somewhere in Between":
"This bittersweet concoction of fear and grace
Chases me inside
But what's the harm in hoping that time won't erase
This momentary rhyme"
and what about this great passage from Isaiah?
"But now thus says the LORD,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
2When you pass through the waters, I will b…

For a second Sunday in a row we were privileged to have a seminary presidsent in our midst to bring THE WORD. Anyone who heard Dr. Mark Ramseth of Trinity Seminary, Columbus, OH, could not miss the transparency of this seminary president's investment in faith formation. For ordained clergy, this is where it starts. But also in the parish.
Mark's take on the text from St. John perfeftly fit faith formation, both in the parish and in the seminary. As we remembered the saints in our parish who had…

Shadows can capture the essence of an object, but they are flat and colorless.
Last week I talked about twin emphases that wind their way through the Bible. There is a concern for rules, boundaries and morals - which I associated with "purity codes" - and then there is what I called the "prophetic" strand. Today I’m trying to tackle
rules, boundaries and morals.…

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

So great a cloud of witnesses
Surrounding me with warmth, wisdom and wonde…

AF Colleagues, Resource Center Directors, Book of Faith Synod Advocates, Family & Friends:
Jonathan Rundman's original song,
Second Language, has been one of our favorites since we first heard it on his
PUBLIC LIBRARY CD. When the Book of Faith initiative challenged us to become more fluent in our first language of faith, the language of Scripture, echoes of Jonathan's beautiful composition kept su…

As we know we are limited by sin that is not where we look to for our strength...we know that God is unlimited in power (omnipotent) so we receive our strength, courage, and hope from that and from HIM! I do not live my life based on me but on Christ...I give as I have received...freely and richly and unlimited (what I give is from God, not from me) If we are in Christ, we are a new creation. I can think out of the box because Christ destroyed the box, I think of what is not and wonder why. Wher…

I look at it like this:
We do not live our lives by our limitations, but by God's limitlessness.
With God NOTHING is impossible.

At Bethany, Cherry Hills Village, CO, we were pleased to hear THE WORD from Dr. James Echols, president of the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (LSTC). What a great morning and aid to our faith formation at Bethany. Dr. Echols had a lively take on the Johannine text and later some of us were priviledged to share lunch and conversation with him. It reaffirmed my contention that our seminaries are vitally involved in the faith formation process, and we even talked a bit about encouraging you…

Last week I wrote a little about how one might think about welcoming gay and lesbian folk into the Christian fold from a Biblical point of view. Actually it is a really awkward question. I mean how can you not welcome people into faith?! But I write because it is an issue for us in the ELCA right now.
I find two major strands of thought in the Bible when it comes to moral or ethica…

I have been enjoying my new devotional booklet..."If God is my Strength, Why am I still tired?" It was written by Maggie Hilmer...a physical therapist who is also a caregiver for her husband (a pastor) who has Parkinson's Disease.
If you know any caregivers...this would be a wonderful gift to them! You can order it from Creative Communications for the Parish.

Ok, so I promised another blog post a few weeks ago, but then just forgot about it. I wanted to continue blogging about my use of the Romans Bible study in the Book of Faith series, so here we go.
The first class, I really tried to keep us on course with the materials. I will say, originally I thought there was not enough materials to fill up and hour and a half Bible study, but wow! We did not get through half of the materials because our discussion was so great. We spent a lot of time on the…
