LUTHERAN STUDY BIBLE as #1 recommendation
It may be a no brainer but I've been struck the last several weeks as I've
recommended LSB to both pastors and lay leaders. It's about as fine a way
to engage people in small group studies, women's/men's groups, adult
education on Sunday, and individual use as we have. Part of this is that it's so
accessible, non-threatening, and packed with basic tools/information that
inspire confidence and curiosity. I can't imagine a better way to "open
scripture." T…

Grab a Bible or web-bible (try bible.crosswalk.com) and read all of Psalm 107 in a single sitting (it's too long to paste here). Now, how do you feel about God?
My thoughts (for what they're worth). In verse 12 "he used suffering to humble them"... was he the efficient cause or just taking advantage of the situation caused by their sinfulness. Either way, the outcome was good, but it's still hard to swallow a God that causes suffering whether it's true or not.
Later verses, like 33-35 clarify…

After 35 years of being a Christian, I finally decided to challenge myself with a Bible Study. I attended a couple hosted by PJ (our pastor) and I found that I enjoyed studying and asking questions. They inspired discussion and I was amazed at how closely events of the Bible paralleled events of today. I began to study women of the Bible on my own, posting the studies in blogs.
PJ then challenged me with the option of leading a Bible study covering the same topic (and he put up race for BBQ, as…

Praise God for More Questions than Answers
Over the past couple of months I have had the pleasure of leading a Women of the Bible Study with a small group of brilliant women in my church. There are teachers, students, professionals, moms, daughters, sisters, wives and girlfriends. We gather each week to discuss one or two women in the Old Testament.
We consider them in the context of their time in history. We reflect on them as human beings; being gifted and flawed, being loved and hated. We l…

The initial idea for this blog involved me sitting on the floor of a Barnes & Noble surrounded by all of the different versions of the Bible. I would be touching the pages, being inspired by the words and the writing, sipping my chai. I’m sure something inspirational would be playing in the background.
As life would have it, things have worked out a bit differently. With the cost of gas, I don’t get up to Barnes & Noble as often as I used to. When I am up there I’m often rushed or looki…

In this video, David Lose of Luther Seminary discusses how fantastic stories or inconsistent accounts in Scripture can lead us to the temptation of
proving the Bible is true. He contends that the truth of the Bible can be seen in its ability to change lives. Watch the video

Genesis 24; 25: 19-34; 26:1-28 Rebekah probably means “Loop” or “Tie”
The first verse that required a double take on my part was the binding of the promise made by Abraham’s servant to Abraham. It’s not a pinky swear or a spit shake, it is a “Put your hand under my thigh and I will make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I live,” (Gen. 24: 3) Abraham wants his servant to put his hand where?…
