Translated by J. J. Parker and O. R. Johnston, Martin Luther’s, The Bondage of The Will, strikes a defiant, sometimes coarse tone. Direct in approach, Luther response to Desiderious Erasmus thoughts on Church, faith and approach. Luther has a systematic approach, which remains consistent and adheres to his theological principles.

The theological introduction helps to maintain a greater understanding, while moving further into this work. Both Erasmus and Luther are regarded in a detailed biographical account. The debate between the two is also detailed. Strong theological issues, really Erasmus the Humanist and Luther the Reforming monk, makes for a strong and precise introduction.

I found the text, as mentioned, systematic in approach. The convictions of Erasmus provoked and then by the pen of Luther, using scripture as his ally, denounced. Luther states, “But may I ask you, dear Erasmus, to bear with my want of eloquence, as I in these matters bear with your want of knowledge…God does not give everything to any single man, and we cannot all do everything- as Paul says, there are diversities of gifts, but the same spirit.” From the assertions in Christianity to God’s method of working evil in man, “Luther reveals his biblical knowledge, seemingly second to none in opinion and dictates a sharp, focused attack to the heart of each point of Erasmus.

In addition, I found the translation to certainly be at the college literacy level and the scriptural reference section of great value. “You say this sort of thing simply because you have not read, or at any rate have not noticed that it is regularly the case with the word of God that the world is thrown into confusion by reason of it.” Luther’s statement resonates, but in may circles also lives on in some respect in culture faith and society…whether he was right or wrong, his debate was strongly held.
